According to a research article published in the academic journal ‘Environmental Research,’ the ZeroWater Filter Pitcher does an excellent job removing arsenic from drinking water.

The Zero Water Pitcher is a Filter pitcher that can also be used as a mini-filter dispenser. It comes in different sizes. The water in the Zero Water Pitcher undergoes a 5 stage filtration process. A TDS meter comes along the pack that allows you to scientifically gauge the filtered water.

ZeroWater® claims that the filter pitchers remove 99 percent of the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). TDS is basically the measurement of all solid organic and inorganic sediments dissolved in a water sample.

It is certified that the ZeroWater filters out impurities such as lead, mercury, chromium, chlorine, as well as PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid).

In this review, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about the Zero Water Pitchers, including features, benefits, filtration process, convenience and benefits, pros, and cons.

Let’s look at some of the other essential attributes of the Zero Water Pitcher.

Features

  • Volume and Capacity: The ZeroWater Filter Pitcher comes in different sizes. There is the 6-cup, 7-cup, 10-cup, and 12-cup filter pitcher.
  • The functionality of a dispenser: These pitchers have a switch on the bottom of the handle which functions like a dispenser. Apart from the pitchers, you can go for a 20-cup, 30-cup, or even a 40-cup model. But these latter models will work only as a dispenser rather than a pitcher.
  • Cost: The current pricing of the ZeroWater filters ranges from $19.99 for the 6-cup model to $39.99 for the 12-cup model.
  • Aesthetics: While the standard structure of the ZeroWater Pitchers is blue in color and an elongated cloth iron shape when viewed from the top; there is one round-shaped pitcher as well.
  • Ease of use: You can comfortably fit pitchers of different sizes (up to the 10-cup pitcher) in your refrigerator. The handle is user-friendly and easy to get a firm hold of. The 12-cup model gets quite heavy when it’s fully filled. So it would be best if you were careful when holding the pitcher by the handle.
  • Filter longevity: According to ZeroWater, each filter removes about 18,000 milligrams of dissolved solids from your tap water. So, depending upon the quality of your tap water, a ZeroWater Filter can last from 3 to 6 months.

5 Stage Filtration Process

ZeroWater’s filters can help you achieve holistic water filtration goals.  Through ZeroWater’s filtration process, you can attain drinking water with TDS levels as low as 000-010ppm.  ZeroWater’s filtration process includes activated carbon and oxidation reduction alloy, removing organic compounds and chlorine taste from your water.

Then there is the Ion Exchange stage that virtually removes all the dissolved solids that might have been leftover or even the metallic residues that may have leached into your water from the water pipes.

Three additional stages are included to remove other preliminary and leftover contaminants. The five-stage filtration process makes sure that your water passes through an appropriate number of treatment layers in order to achieve a “000” reading on your TDS meter.

First stage: The first stage is the coarse filter screen. In this stage, the filter removes fine suspended solids in water that make your water look cloudy.

Second stage: The second stage is that of the foam distributor. The primary purpose of this stage is to maximize the contact time. The water gets more evenly dispersed across the entire width of the filter. It helps more efficient use of the filter medium. The additional suspended solids are removed in this stage.

Third stage: The third stage is the Multi-Layer Activated Carbon and Oxidation-Reduction Alloy. This stage is especially significant for filtering out organic contaminants and for improved taste. According to the ZeroWater UK website, this stage removes organic contaminants;

  • Herbicides,
  • Pesticides,
  • Mercury,
  • Chloramine,
  • Chlorine, and
  • Prevents bacteria growth.

Fourth stage: This is the Dual Comprehensive Exchange of Ion Resins. This stage of filtration helps in separating the water molecules from foreign objects. Inorganic compounds, which include metals, non-metals, and radiological compounds, are removed in this stage

Fifth stage: The fifth stage is the Ultra Fine Screen and Non-Woven Membrane Layers. It removes the ultra-fine sediments & remaining suspended solids.

How do you use a ZeroWater filter pitcher?

Before the first use, you must clean the components thoroughly. Use warm water for cleaning. If you are using soap, rinse the bottle perfectly before use.

After that, assemble the product and install the filter cartridges following the user manual.

Once you are done with the installation, carefully fill the filter with tap water.

Follow this process below:

  • First of all, remove the lid.
  • Then slowly fill the upper chamber with cold tap water. Be cautious. Do not fill the water too quickly into the upper chamber when the lower chamber is not yet starting to fill. This might lead to spillage.
  • Wait for the water to pass through the filters from the upper chamber to the lower chamber. This will take several minutes.
  • Test the filtered water with the TDS meter. It should confirm a “000” or similarly low reading (e.g. 002). If the TDS meter doesn’t read within the range as promised, flush the water out and check once again for all the connections and seals. Then repeat the above process again. It should work now.
  • Do not overfill. When the water in the lower chamber reaches the marked ‘MAXIMUM WATER LEVEL,’ do not put any more water in the upper chamber to avoid leakage. The upper chamber isn’t meant to be a long-term reservoir.

Benefits of ZeroWater Pitcher

No wastage: The ZeroWater filtration system doesn’t waste any water, and its operation is based on gravity.

Independent: It doesn’t need to be installed into your plumbing and is an independent filtration system.

5-Stage filtration process: ZeroWater claims that 5-stage filters result in a more comprehensive filtration than 2-stage.

It holds that it removes 99.6 percent detectable dissolved solids that can be scientifically checked using the TDS meter provided along with the pack. It filters out both organic and inorganic materials as well as metallic and non-metallic pollutants from tap water.

Pro’s and Cons of ZeroWater Filter Pitcher

Pros

5 Stage Filters bring down TDS Levels To 0 or near 0 levels: ZeroWater claims its filter gets rid of 99.6% of the solid pollutants present in tap water. It is NSF certified.

Certified to Reduce heavy metals such as lead: ZeroWater filters remove 99 percent of lead from your tap water. This is good news as the consumption of high amounts of lead can cause serious health issues. It can pose a significant risk to brain development which is irreversible in nature.

Lead poisoning can lead to damage of kidneys and nervous system in both children and adults. In extreme circumstances, high levels of lead consumption can even cause seizures and death. Lead is dangerous in pregnant and can distort the development of the fetus.

Transparency regarding purity levels: You get a TDS meter with the ZeroWater Pitcher package. You can test the purity level of your water every time you filter it.

The ability of the consumers to test and verify the efficiency of the filters is an exceptional feature. Such transparency in maintaining the purity levels of drinking water is a welcome initiative by ZeroWater.

Ion Exchange Technology: The dual bed ion exchange technology in the ZeroWater purification process is one of the most effective water filtration methods.

The ion exchange technology helps in removing unwanted materials especially dissolved inorganic substances. The ion tech makes ZeroWater an efficient option to attain healthy drinking water.

Easy to install & User friendly: There is no setup cost for ZeroWater. It is pretty easy to install, and you can easily do it independently following the user manual.  It is also easy to clean.

Cons

Filter life expectancy is short: Many users have reported the issue of the short lifespan of the Zerowater filter. Depending on the TDS levels of tap water, the life expectancy of the filters ranges from 2 to 6 months.

The lifespan is especially shortened when your tap water contains higher TDS levels. Once a filter loses its ability, the TDS levels and taste of the water also deteriorate.

Filtration speed is slow: As the water has to undergo five stages of filtration, the filtration speed & flow rate can be delayed.

Expensive Filter: Since a five-stage process is used in making the ZeroWater filters, replacing the filters is relatively more expensive.

pH level reduces with time: Once the ZeroWater filter nears expiry, the pH levels in the filtered water begin to reduce. This change in pH causes a change in the taste of the water.

It Gets Rid of Useful Minerals: ZeroWater filters reduce TDS to zero. In the process, it also gets rid of a certain amount of valuable minerals. Certain natural minerals beneficial to the body are also removed during the filtration process to attain zero TDS.

Unusual taste: Initially, you may take some time to adapt to the taste of the ZeroWater filter. This is especially true if your taste buds are already used to tap water or filtered water from a different company.

ZeroWater filtered water can even have a fishy smell or taste – for more detailed information on what causes this, see this other article we wrote.

FAQS

Is ZeroWater dishwasher safe?

The ZeroWater Filter’s ‘Use and Care Instructions’ read that all plastic components and filter cartridges must be cleaned by washing and rinsing thoroughly with warm water.

The Filter Pitcher components, including the filter cartridges and TDS meter, are not dishwasher safe. When washed with soap, you must rinse the Pitcher components thoroughly.

What is the TDS meter reading?

The TDS meter included in the ZeroWater box is used to read the total dissolved solids (TDS) in Parts Per Million, ppm in your water.

Does the 5-stage filter of ZeroWater reduce the pH of water?

Generally speaking, by itself, the ZeroWater 5-stage filtration does not change the pH levels of the water. However, after continued use of the filter when it nears expiry, a reduction in pH may occur.

Although the pH reduction is not dangerous, you might very well experience a change in taste. ZeroWater recommends replacing the filters upon exhaustion, and you shouldn’t attempt to overuse your filter.

How fast is the water filtration process through the ZeroWater filter device?

The filtration process in the ZeroWater filters will be slower because ZeroWater involves a 5-stage filtration process, unlike conventional 2-stage filters.

What is the type of plastic that is used in the ZeroWater products?

According to the ZeroWater® official website, ZeroWater filters are made of BPA Free Polypropylene.

How long is the life of ZeroWater filters?

Filter life depends on two major factors. First, your household water consumption, and second, the amount of TDS (total dissolved solids) in your tap water. You can refer to this TDS chart to understand the number of gallons that you will get per filter.

You must periodically test your filtered water with the TDS meter. As and when the meter reads a figure of 006 or higher, you need to replace your filters. You may also notice a difference in taste when the ZeroWater® filter reaches the end of life.

Does the TDS Meter measure lead levels?

The ZeroWater filter boasts of filtering lead in your water by 99 percent. However, the TDS meter measures only total dissolved solids in the water and is not equipped to measure lead or PFOA/PFOS levels.
