At some point your GE water softener will probably give you an error code. Most of these issues are minor and easy to fix at home. In this guide, we’ll walk you through each error code for GE water softener models GXSHC40N (the Smart model), GXSH40V, and GXSH45V.
While the smart GXSHC40N model provides a bit more detail in its error diagnostics, the error codes for all three models (GXSHC40N, GXSH40V, GXSH45V) are effectively the same when it comes to troubleshooting.
GE Water Softener Error Codes
If your GE water softener detects an error, it won’t stay quiet about it!
It’ll beep every 30 seconds (between 8 AM and 8 PM) to get your attention, you’ll see the screen flash “Err”, and the blue indicator light will blink rapidly. First, try unplugging it from the wall and then plugging it back in. This simple reset can often clear the issue. If you see “Err 6”, “7”, or “8”, just press and hold the Recharge button for 5 seconds to clear it. If the error returns, it’s time to do a little troubleshooting or call for service.
Error Codes 1, 3, 4, 5
Cause: Wiring issue. Most likely from a loose connection in the control board.
What to do:
- Unplug the unit from power.
- Remove the control panel cover by releasing the side clips.
- Check for any loose or incorrect wiring connections to the electronic board or switch.
- Reconnect as needed, ensuring all connections are secure.
- Reassemble the control cover and plug the unit back in.
- Wait 8 minutes to see if the error code reappears.
- If the error comes back, it’s time to call for service.
Note:
The control panel cover is the top plastic piece that sits over the display and buttons on your GE water softener. To get to it, you’ll usually need to lift the salt lid first. Then, release the two clips at the back of the top cover, tilt it forward, and lift it off. This gives you access to the faceplate and internal wiring if you need to check for loose connections, which are often behind Error codes 1 to 5.
Error Codes 6, 7, 8
Cause: Problem with the Water Shutoff Valve.
What to do:
- Unplug the power supply.
- Replace the water shutoff valve if needed.
- Check the wiring to the electronic board.
- Reassemble the unit and plug it back in.
- If you see the error code again, press and hold the Recharge button for 5 seconds.
- Wait 2 minutes to see if the error clears.
- If the error returns, then you’ll need to ask for service help.
“Err” in Display
Cause: A general electrical problem.
What to do: Unfortunately, GE doesn’t offer much DIY advice here. So, you’ll need to visit their website for customer support.
Why does the MODE/SET button still work?
When an error code shows up on your GE water softener, the MODE/SET button is still active. This is so a technician (or an experienced DIYer) can enter the unit into diagnostic mode and then pinpoint the issue.
Error Codes for GXSH40V and GXSH45V GE Models
The GXSH40V and GXSH45V GE water softener models use the same manual and the same control board. Even though the manual does not list the error codes, these units can show Error 1, 3, 4, or 5, which indicate wiring related issues. These models can also show “Err” on the screen, indicating an electrical fault.
While they don’t have smart diagnostics like the GXSHC40N, the troubleshooting steps are the same: unplug, inspect wiring, reconnect, and test.
