What is fluoride?

How does a water bottle filter out fluoride?

Typically, it’s quite challenging to filter fluoride from water.

1. Activated alumina (AA)

3. Then rinsing with demineralized water and dipping in natural mineral water to issue the filter doesn’t alter the mineral composition of the filtered water

Regular cleaning with the regeneration agents is necessary for optimal performance. Also, consider regularly replacing the filter or as indicated by the manufacturer.

2. Bone char carbon filters

Bone char is an effective filtration method to remove fluoride from raw water. It can remove 90% of fluoride and has been used for ages and is still applied in the manufacture of water filters.

The filter works by absorbing the fluoride ions and replacing them with the carbonate from the char. However, the effectiveness depends on:

• quality of char preparation
• contact time
• water pH (the best being 6.5 or lower)
• fluoride concentration
• presence of other ions like arsenic in the water

3. Activated carbon

Activated carbon filters are not the best option for removing fluoride from fluoridated water. However, they can reduce some fluoride concentrations in pure water.

The National Library of Medicine study showed that activated carbon could effectively reduce fluoride in up to 210L of pure water with a fluoride concentration of 0.8 mg F/L. But only 8L when filtering tap water with the same fluoride concentration.

The activated carbon filter acts as a large surface that absorbs the fluoride ions reducing their concentration in the filtered water.

Typically, with the concentration of fluoride is high, activated carbon is less effective. Although, the levels of fluoride in everyday tap is not high, meaning activated carbon filters can prove relatively effective.

Do Brita water bottle filters remove fluoride?
